Yr Her Feddwl Fawr – Stori’r Mis

Pencampwr y Tawelwch

Dydd Mawrth oedd hi, ac roedd Maggie yn casáu dydd Mawrth.

Roedd dydd Mawrth yn golygu un peth: dosbarth campfa. Roedd dosbarth campfa yn golygu un peth: dewis timau. Roedd dewis timau yn golygu un peth: byddai Maggie yn cael ei dewis olaf. Fel bob amser.

Roedd Maggie yn fyfyrwraig newydd y flwyddyn honno mewn dosbarth o bencampwyr. Er mwyn ei helpu ei hun i gofio'r plant eraill, roedd hi wedi meddwl am deitl arbennig i bob un.

Roedd Kevin, Pencampwr y Ddesg Glan; a Lynnie, Pencampwr Gwybod yr Ateb yn Gyntaf; a Caroline, Pencampwr Hwyr. Ac yn y blaen.

Roedd hi wedi gorfod meddwl yn hir ac yn galed i ddarganfod ei theitl arbennig ei hun. Ar ôl pum wythnos gyfan o ysgol, roedd Maggie wedi penderfynu.

Hi oedd Pencampwr y Tawelwch.

Eisteddodd Pencampwr y Tawelwch ar lawr y gampfa, wedi'i gwasgu rhwng Pencampwr y Breuddwydio a Phencampwr y Jôcs Gwirion. Teimlai Maggie yn ddigalon. Roedd hi'n gwybod beth oedd i ddod. Ystyriodd newid ei theitl i Bencampwr y Dewis Olaf.

Gofynnodd Mr. Murphy, yr athro campfa, am wirfoddolwyr i ddewis y timau pêl-fasged.

Saethodd y dwylo arferol i'r awyr.

Ochneidiodd Maggie a bwrw cipolwg i'w dde. Daliodd lygad Jasmine, Pencampwr y Jau Cyrsif. Meddyliodd Maggie y gallai fod yn ffrind i Jasmine ond ni theimlai byth yn ddigon dewr i siarad â hi.

Wrth edrych ar Jasmine, sylweddolodd Maggie fod Jasmine yn ymddangos ychydig yn ddig hefyd. Meddyliodd Maggie, nid fi yw'r unig un sy'n cael ei dewis olaf. Weithiau mae Jasmine yn cael ei dewis olaf hefyd.

Gyda hynny, cafodd Pencampwr y Tawelwch syniad.

Gofynnodd Mr. Murphy, "Oes unrhyw un arall eisiau gwirfoddoli heddiw?"

Teimlodd Maggie ei llaw yn codi'n araf. Edrychodd eto ar Jasmine a chymryd anadl ddofn.

Efallai ei bod hi'n bryd i Bencampwr y Tawelwch ddefnyddio ei llais.

"Maggie?" Gwenodd Mr. Murphy. "Wyt ti eisiau tro?"

Ydw i? meddyliodd Maggie. "Ie," meddai hi.

Swmiodd y dosbarth. Maggie yn arwain tîm?

"Ie," atebodd hi eto, yn uwch y tro hwn. Crynodd ei llais ychydig.

"Beth sy'n dy atal di, felly?" Cyfarchodd Mr. Murphy Maggie i flaen y gampfa, lle safodd y tri chapten arall — Pencampwr Rhaff Neidio ar Un Droed, Pencampwr Peidio â Cholli Ergyd, a Phencampwr Ddim yn Gwybod Sut i Golli — yn barod i ddewis eu timau.

“Maggie, ti sy’n cael y dewis cyntaf,” meddai Mr. Murphy.

“Jasmine,” cyhoeddodd Pencampwr y Tawelwch.

Chwarddodd y dosbarth. Ai jôc oedd hyn? Mwy nag unwaith, roedd Jasmine wedi ceisio sgorio ar y fasged anghywir.

Gwenodd Maggie ac ailadroddodd, “Jasmine.”

Gyda llygaid llydan, cymerodd Jasmine ei lle wrth ymyl Maggie.

Galwodd y tri chapten arall enwau cyfarwydd — y chwaraewyr gorau ar y cwrt pêl-fasged.

Tro Maggie oedd hi eto. “Rwy’n dewis Jamie.”

Jamie, Pencampwr y Les Esgidiau Heb ei Rhwymo. Ni allai Jamie ddriblo, taflu, na dal. Roedd yn gwybod sut beth oedd bod y dewis olaf.

Ond nid heddiw.

Loncian Jamie i sefyll wrth ymyl Jasmine. Dim ond unwaith y baglodd. Eisteddodd y dosbarth mewn sioc.

Felly aeth hi. Llifodd yr enwau o geg Maggie, yn swnio'n sicr ac yn gryf. Po gryfaf y swniodd, y cryfaf y teimlai.

Daeth tri thîm talentog iawn i ffurf.

Ac yna roedd tîm Maggie.

Edrychodd Maggie ar ei chyd-chwaraewyr. Yno safodd Jasmine a Jamie, ynghyd â Gillian (Pencampwr y Cwtshis) a George (Pencampwr Offeryn Cerdd Mawr Iawn). Roedden nhw'n gwenu ar Maggie.

Gwenodd Maggie yn ôl. Rydw i wedi dewis y tîm gwaethaf yn hanes y byd, meddyliodd hi.

Cerddodd Pencampwr y Tawelwch ar y cwrt gyda'i thîm yn agos y tu ôl, yn barod i wynebu chwaraewyr oedd yn fwy ac yn well.

Gêm ymlaen!

Llithrodd y bêl-fasged trwy fysedd Jamie, sglefriodd o amgylch Jasmine, driblodd ei hun i ffwrdd o George a Gillian, a bownsiodd oddi ar ben Maggie - ddwywaith. Atseiniodd eu chwerthin ledled y gampfa.

Gan afael yn y bêl ac allan o anadl o redeg a chwerthin, clywodd Maggie Jasmine yn gweiddi, “Mags! Pasiwch y bêl i mi!”

Mae gen i lysenw, meddyliodd Maggie yn hapus. Taflodd y bêl i Jasmine.

Wrth gwrs, collodd Jasmine. Nhw oedd y Tîm Gwaethaf yn Hanes y Byd yn wir.

Ac fe wnaethon nhw'r hyn y byddai unrhyw Dîm Gwaethaf yn ei wneud. Collon nhw. Collon nhw'n fawr.

Ond nid yw colli gêm bêl-fasged yn eich gwneud chi'n gollwr; roedd Maggie yn gwybod cymaint â hynny. Gwenodd Maggie ar ei thîm. Ni yw, yn swyddogol, Pencampwyr Dim Sgôr, meddyliodd hi. Anhygoel.

Cerddodd Pencampwr y Tawelwch oddi ar y cwrt gyda'i ffrindiau newydd. Ac wrth i'r grŵp wneud cynlluniau i eistedd gyda'i gilydd i ginio, nid oedd Maggie bellach yn synnu o glywed ei llais ei hun yn ymuno â'r côr swnllyd.

Cwestiynau

1.     Mae Maggie a'i chyd-chwaraewyr yn cael hwyl yn chwarae pêl-fasged, er eu bod yn colli. Pam mae hyn yn eu gwneud yn hapus? Rhowch enghraifft o amser pan gawsoch chi hwyl dim ond trwy fod yn chi'ch hun.

2.      Yn y stori fer, mae Maggie yn dewis newid y ffordd y mae pethau trwy wirfoddoli i fod yn gapten. Sut mae Maggie yn ddewr pan mae hi'n dewis codi ei llaw? Disgrifiwch amser pan ddangosoch chi ddewrder oherwydd eich bod chi eisiau gwneud newid.

3.      Mae Maggie yn rhoi'r enw "Pencampwr y Tawelwch" iddi hi ei hun. Sut mae hi'n newid beth mae'r enw hwn yn ei olygu trwy benderfynu bod yn gapten tîm? Pe bai'n rhaid i chi roi enw neu deitl i chi'ch hun, beth

fyddai e? Sut mae'r enw hwnnw'n eich gwneud chi'n bwy ydych chi?

The Big Thinking Challenge – Story of the Month

The Champion of Quiet

It was a Tuesday, and Maggie hated Tuesdays.

Tuesdays meant one thing: gym class. Gym class meant one thing: picking teams. Picking teams meant one thing: Maggie would be picked last. As always.

Maggie was a new student that year in a class of champions. To help herself remember the other kids, she’d come up with a special title for each one.

There was Kevin, Champion of the Clean Desk; and Lynnie, Champion of Knowing the Answer First; and Caroline, Champion of Tardy. And so on.

She’d had to think long and hard to figure out her own special title. After five whole weeks of school, Maggie had decided.

She was the Champion of Quiet.

The Champion of Quiet sat on the gym floor, sandwiched between the Champion of Daydreaming and the Champion of Goofy Jokes. Maggie felt blue. She knew what was coming. She considered changing her title to Champion of Last Pick.

Mr. Murphy, the gym teacher, asked for volunteers to pick the basketball teams.

The usual hands shot into the air.

Maggie sighed and glanced to her right. She caught the eye of Jasmine, Champion of Cursive J’s. Maggie thought she might like to be Jasmine’s friend but never felt brave enough to talk to her.

Looking at Jasmine, Maggie realized that Jasmine seemed a little blue, too. Maggie thought, I’m not the only one picked last. Sometimes Jasmine is picked last, too.

With that, the Champion of Quiet had an idea.

Mr. Murphy asked, “Anyone else want to volunteer today?”

Maggie felt her hand slowly rise. She looked again at Jasmine and took a big breath.

Maybe it was time for the Champion of Quiet to use her voice.

“Maggie?” Mr. Murphy smiled. “You want a turn?”

Do I? Maggie wondered. “Yes,” she said.

The class murmured. Maggie leading a team?

“Yes,” she answered again, louder this time. Her voice shook just a little.

“What’s stopping you, then?” Mr. Murphy waved Maggie to the front of the gym, where the other three captains — Champion of Jumping Rope on One Foot, Champion of Never Misses a Shot, and Champion of Doesn’t Know How to Lose — stood, ready to choose their teams.

“Maggie, you get first pick,” said Mr. Murphy.

“Jasmine,” announced the Champion of Quiet.

The class snickered. Was this a joke? More than once, Jasmine had tried to score on the wrong basket.

Maggie smiled and repeated, “Jasmine.”

Eyes wide, Jasmine took her place beside Maggie.

The other three captains called out familiar names — the best players on the basketball court.

It was Maggie’s turn again. “I choose Jamie.”

Jamie, Champion of the Untied Shoelace. Jamie could not dribble, throw, or catch. He knew what it felt like to be the last pick.

But not today.

Jamie jogged to stand next to Jasmine. He tripped only once. The class sat in shock.

So it went. The names flowed from Maggie’s mouth, sounding sure and strong. The stronger she sounded, the stronger she felt.

Three very talented teams took shape.

And then there was Maggie’s team.

Maggie looked at her teammates. There stood Jasmine and Jamie, plus Gillian (Champion of Hugs) and George (Champion of Very Big Musical Instrument). They were grinning at Maggie.

Maggie grinned back. I have chosen the worst team in the history of the world, she thought.

The Champion of Quiet walked onto the court with her team close behind, ready to face players who were bigger and better.

Game on!

The basketball slipped through Jamie’s fingers, skated around Jasmine, dribbled itself away from George and Gillian, and bounced off Maggie’s head — twice. Their laughter echoed throughout the gym.

Clutching the ball and out of breath from running and giggling, Maggie heard Jasmine call out, “Mags! Pass the ball to me!”

I have a nickname, Maggie thought happily. She threw the ball to Jasmine.

Of course, Jasmine missed. They were indeed the Worst Team in the History of the World.

And they did what any Worst Team would do. They lost. They lost big.

But losing a basketball game doesn’t make you a loser; Maggie knew that much. Maggie grinned at her team. We are, officially, the Champions of No Score, she thought. Awesome.

The Champion of Quiet walked off the court with her new friends. And as the group made plans to sit together at lunch, Maggie was no longer surprised to hear her own voice joining the noisy chorus.

Questions

  1. Maggie and her teammates have fun playing basketball, even though they lose. Why does this make them happy? Give an example of a time when you had fun just by being yourself.

  2. In the short story, Maggie chooses to change the way things are by volunteering to be a captain. How is Maggie brave when she makes the choice to raise her hand? Describe a time when you showed bravery because you wanted to make a change.

  3. Maggie gives herself the name “The Champion of Quiet.” How does she change what this name means by deciding to be a team captain? If you had to give yourself a name or title, what would it be? How does that name make you who you are?
