Helpu Plant i Gymryd eu Camau Nesaf tuag at Annibyniaeth: Gosod Nodau a Thargedau

Mae plant yn tyfu pan fydd ganddyn nhw rywbeth i weithio tuag ato. Nid oes rhaid iddo fod yn fawr. Nid oes rhaid iddo fod yn berffaith. Ond mae cael cyfeiriad (hyd yn oed un bach) yn newid y ffordd maen nhw'n mynd ati i ddysgu. Mae plentyn sy'n gwybod beth maen nhw'n anelu ato yn dechrau edrych ar eu gwaith yn wahanol. Maen nhw'n dechrau adnabod y camau sy'n eu helpu i symud ymlaen, ac maen nhw'n dechrau sylwi pan fydd eu hymdrech eu hunain yn gwneud gwahaniaeth.

Nid maint y targed sy'n bwysig wrth osod nodau ond yr ymdeimlad o bwrpas y tu ôl iddo. Weithiau mae oedolyn yn dewis y targed: cwblhau tasg, ymarfer sgil, gorffen darn o waith. Weithiau mae'n dechrau dod gan y plentyn: “Rwyf am wella ar…,” “Y tro nesaf byddaf yn ceisio…,” “Rwy'n credu y gallaf wella hyn.” Mae'r adegau hyn yn dangos newid. Nid yw'r plentyn bellach yn gweithio dim ond oherwydd bod y dasg yno. Maen nhw'n gweithio oherwydd eu bod nhw eisiau gweld eu hunain yn tyfu.

Unwaith y bydd plant yn dechrau gosod eu nodau eu hunain, hyd yn oed rhai bach, mae rhywbeth pwysig yn digwydd: maen nhw'n dechrau gwirio gyda nhw eu hunain. Maen nhw'n sylwi pan maen nhw'n gwella. Maen nhw'n cydnabod pryd mae angen iddyn nhw addasu. Maen nhw'n dechrau defnyddio eu barn eu hunain, nid dim ond arweiniad oedolion, i lunio eu camau nesaf. Mae'r arfer hwn o edrych yn ôl yn fyr cyn symud ymlaen yn meithrin hyder ac annibyniaeth. Mae'n dysgu plant bod cynnydd yn rhywbeth y gallant ddylanwadu arno.

Mae gosod nodau hefyd yn helpu plant i ddeall her mewn ffordd newydd. Pan fyddant yn dewis targed sy'n eu hymestyn, maent yn gwneud datganiad am yr hyn y maent yn credu sy'n bosibl. Maent yn dechrau gweld her fel rhan o welliant, nid rhywbeth i'w osgoi. Daw'r ymdrech yn ystyrlon. Nid ydynt bellach yn syml yn cwblhau gwaith; maent yn symud tuag at rywbeth.

Wrth i blant ymarfer meddwl am eu cynnydd eu hunain, maent yn darganfod nad yw nodau yn wrthrychau sefydlog. Gallant symud, tyfu, neu gael eu disodli pan fydd plentyn yn sylweddoli eu bod yn barod am rywbeth newydd. Mae'r hyblygrwydd hwn yn dysgu plant nad yw dysgu yn llinell syth. Mae'n gylch o geisio, sylwi, addasu, a cheisio eto. Ac yn bwysig, maent yn dysgu bod pob cam newydd yn eiddo iddyn nhw ei gymryd.

Pan fydd yr ysgol a'r cartref ill dau yn siarad am nodau mewn ffyrdd syml ac anogol, mae plant yn dysgu nad yw targedau'n ymwneud â phwysau. Maent yn ymwneud â chyfeiriad. Maent yn helpu plant i ddeall eu hunain fel dysgwyr â rheolaeth: dysgwyr sy'n gallu myfyrio, gwneud dewisiadau, a phenderfynu beth sy'n dod nesaf iddynt. Daw'r ymdeimlad hwnnw o gyfeiriad yn rhan o'u hannibyniaeth. Mae'n eu helpu i symud trwy heriau gyda phwrpas ac yn rhoi rheswm iddynt barhau i dyfu ymhell ar ôl i'r dasg o'u blaenau gael ei chwblhau.

Ydych chi eisiau gweld ein fframwaith cyfan er mwyn gweld holl linynnau annibyniaeth? Lawrlwythwch isod:

Crynodeb o'n Taith

Dros y gyfres ddiwethaf o fwletinau, rydym wedi teithio gyda'n gilydd trwy linynnau ein Fframwaith Annibyniaeth, gan archwilio sut mae plant yn tyfu o ymdrechion cynnar petrus i fod yn ddysgwyr hyderus, myfyriol, hunangyfeiriedig. Mae pob llinyn wedi cynnig lens wahanol ar annibyniaeth, a gyda'i gilydd maent yn ffurfio darlun o sut mae plant yn raddol yn dysgu deall eu hunain, eu dysgu, a'u lle o fewn cymuned.

Dechreuon ni gyda ‘Trio’, y wreichionen gynharaf o annibyniaeth. Dyma lle dysgodd plant ddechrau, rhoi cynnig arni, a thrin camgymeriadau fel rhan o ddysgu yn hytrach nag arwyddion o fethiant. O'r fan honno, helpodd 'Dalbarhau' ni i weld sut mae plant yn dysgu parhau pan fydd tasgau'n heriol, sut maen nhw'n dychwelyd i heriau, a sut mae anogaeth gan oedolion yn eu helpu i feithrin stamina a hyder.

Unwaith y gallai plant ddechrau a pharhau i fynd, archwiliwyd yr amodau sy'n cefnogi'r ymdrech hon. Dangosodd 'Rheoli Gwrthdyniadau sut mae plant yn dysgu sefydlogi eu sylw a gwneud penderfyniadau sy'n amddiffyn eu ffocws. Yna tynnodd 'Gwneud Dewisiadau' sylw at sut mae plant yn dechrau cymryd perchnogaeth o'u meddwl, gan ddewis strategaethau ac opsiynau gyda mwy o ymwybyddiaeth o ganlyniadau.

Wrth i annibyniaeth dyfu allan i'r byd cymdeithasol, trowyd at 'Rhannu', 'Gwrando', 'Cyfathrebu', 'Dangos Empathi', a 'Chynnwys Eraill'. Helpodd y llinynnau hyn ni i ddeall sut mae plant yn dysgu cymryd rhan yn bwrpasol mewn grŵp, cydbwyso eu hanghenion eu hunain ag anghenion eraill, a chydnabod bod gwahanol safbwyntiau'n cyfoethogi dysgu a pherthnasoedd. Gyda'i gilydd, dangosodd y llinynnau hyn nad yw annibyniaeth yn ymwneud â gwneud pethau ar eich pen eich hun yn unig, ond â dod yn rhywun sy'n cyfrannu'n feddylgar at y mannau y maent yn byw ynddynt.

Yna symudom yn ôl i fyd mewnol dysgu. Goleuodd 'Chwilfrydig' sut mae chwilfrydedd yn datblygu, sut mae plant yn ffurfio cwestiynau, a sut mae archwilio'n dod yn offeryn ar gyfer deall. Dangosodd 'Meddwl' a 'Gwneud Cysylltiadau' sut mae plant yn trefnu syniadau, yn cymharu safbwyntiau, ac yn cysylltu cysyniadau ar draws profiadau. Mae'r arferion meddwl hyn yn cefnogi plant i ddod yn ddysgwyr hyblyg, meddylgar a all wneud synnwyr o gymhlethdod.

Nesaf, archwiliwyd llinynnau seiliedig ar weithredu. Cipiodd 'Archwilio' yr hyder ymarferol y mae plant yn ei ennill wrth iddynt brofi offer, adnoddau a sefyllfaoedd. Datgelodd ‘Cynllunio’ a ‘Rhesymu’ sut mae plant yn dysgu meddwl ymlaen llaw, pwyso a mesur gwybodaeth, a dod i gasgliadau. Helpodd ‘Gwerthuso’ nhw i edrych yn ôl ar yr hyn maen nhw wedi’i wneud, cydnabod yr hyn a weithiodd, ac ystyried beth i’w addasu’r tro nesaf.

Yn olaf, archwiliwyd yr arferion sy’n helpu plant i reoli llif eu diwrnod a’u rôl mewn cymuned. Helpodd ‘Rheoli Amser’ blant i ddeall cyflymder, trefn arferol, a blaenoriaethu. Dangosodd ‘Cyfranogi’ sut mae plant yn camu’n weithredol i ddysgu ar y cyd. Archwiliodd ‘Her a Chymhelliant’ sut mae ymdrech ac uchelgais yn tyfu pan fydd plant yn teimlo eu bod yn cael eu cefnogi. Atgoffodd ‘Cymryd Risgiau’ ni fod angen dewrder ar annibyniaeth – a bod diogelwch yn dod nid o osgoi risg, ond o ddysgu sut i’w ymdrin yn feddylgar.

Daeth ein llinynnau olaf, ‘Myfyrio’ a ‘Cymryd Cyfrifoldeb’, â’r daith yn ôl i’r dechrau. Dysgodd plant edrych yn ôl gyda gonestrwydd, i gydnabod effaith eu dewisiadau, ac i ddeall bod annibyniaeth yn cynnwys cyfrifoldeb personol ac ystyriaeth i eraill. Yn y bwletin cloi, ‘Gosod Nodau a Thargedau’, gwelsom sut mae’r holl linynnau hyn yn dod at ei gilydd i helpu plant i lunio eu camau nesaf gyda phwrpas, hyder, a hunanymwybyddiaeth gynyddol.

Ar draws y daith hon, mae un thema wedi dal popeth at ei gilydd: mae annibyniaeth yn cael ei hadeiladu trwy bartneriaeth rhwng plant, teuluoedd ac ysgol. Pan fyddwn yn defnyddio iaith a rennir a negeseuon cyson, mae plant yn dysgu nad yw annibyniaeth yn rhywbeth y mae’n rhaid iddynt ei lywio ar eu pen eu hunain. Mae’n ffordd o ymdrin â dysgu, perthnasoedd a heriau gyda hyder, chwilfrydedd a gofal.

Helping Children Take Their Next Steps to Independence: Goal and Target Setting

Children grow when they have something to work towards. It doesn’t have to be big. It doesn’t have to be perfect. But having a direction (even a small one) changes the way they approach learning. A child who knows what they are aiming for begins to look at their work differently. They start to recognise the steps that help them move forward, and they begin to notice when their own effort makes a difference.

What matters in goal setting is not the size of the target but the sense of purpose behind it. Sometimes the target is chosen by an adult: complete a task, practise a skill, finish a piece of work. Sometimes it begins to come from the child: “I want to get better at…,” “Next time I’ll try…,” “I think I can improve this.” These moments show a shift. The child is no longer working only because the task is there. They are working because they want to see themselves grow.

Once children start setting their own goals, even small ones, something important happens: they begin to check in with themselves. They notice when they are improving. They recognise when they need to adjust. They begin to use their own judgement, not just adult guidance, to shape their next steps. This habit of looking back briefly before moving forward builds confidence and independence. It teaches children that progress is something they can influence.

Goal setting also helps children understand challenge in a new way. When they choose a target that stretches them, they are making a statement about what they believe is possible. They begin to see challenge as part of improvement, not something to avoid. The effort becomes meaningful. They are no longer simply completing work; they are moving towards something.

As children practise thinking about their own progress, they discover that goals are not fixed objects. They can shift, grow, or be replaced when a child realises they are ready for something new. This flexibility teaches children that learning is not a straight line. It is a cycle of trying, noticing, adjusting, and trying again. And importantly, they learn that each new step is theirs to take.

When school and home both talk about goals in simple, encouraging ways, children learn that targets aren’t about pressure. They are about direction. They help children understand themselves as learners with agency: learners who can reflect, make choices, and decide what comes next for them. That sense of direction becomes part of their independence. It helps them move through challenges with purpose and gives them a reason to keep growing long after the task in front of them is done.

Want to see our whole framework to see all the strands of independence in one go? Download it here:

A Summary of Our Journey

Over the past series of bulletins, we have travelled together through the strands of our Independence Framework, exploring how children grow from tentative early attempts into confident, reflective, self‑directed learners. Each strand has offered a different lens on independence, and together they form a picture of how children gradually learn to understand themselves, their learning, and their place within a community.

We began with ‘Try’, the earliest spark of independence. This was where children learned to begin, to have a go, and to treat mistakes as part of learning rather than signs of failure. From there, ‘Persevere’ helped us see how children learn to continue when tasks are demanding, how they return to challenges, and how encouragement from adults helps them build stamina and confidence.

Once children could begin and keep going, we explored the conditions that support this effort. ‘Managing Distractions’ showed how children learn to steady their attention and make decisions that protect their focus. ‘Make Choices’ then highlighted how children begin to take ownership of their thinking, selecting strategies and options with increasing awareness of consequences.

As independence grew outward into the social world, we turned to ‘Sharing’, ‘Listening’, ‘Communicating’, ‘Empathise’, and ‘Including Others’. These strands helped us understand how children learn to participate purposefully in a group, balance their own needs with the needs of others, and recognise that different perspectives enrich both learning and relationships. Together, these strands showed that independence is not simply about doing things alone, but about becoming someone who contributes thoughtfully to the spaces they inhabit.

We then shifted back into the internal world of learning. ‘Inquisitive’ illuminated how curiosity develops, how children form questions, and how exploration becomes a tool for understanding. ‘Think’ and ‘Making Connections’ showed how children organise ideas, compare viewpoints, and link concepts across experiences. These habits of mind support children in becoming flexible, thoughtful learners who can make sense of complexity.

Next, we explored action‑based strands. ‘Explore’ captured the hands‑on confidence children gain as they test out tools, resources, and situations. ‘Planning’ and ‘Reason’ revealed how children learn to think ahead, weigh information, and form conclusions. ‘Evaluate’ helped them look back at what they have done, recognise what worked, and consider what to adjust next time.

Finally, we examined the habits that help children manage the flow of their day and their role in a community. ‘Time Management’ helped children understand pacing, routine, and prioritising. ‘Participate’ showed how children step actively into shared learning. ‘Challenge and Motivation’ explored how effort and ambition grow when children feel supported. ‘Take Risks’ reminded us that independence requires courage — and that safety comes not from avoiding risk, but from learning how to approach it thoughtfully.

Our final strands, ‘Reflection’ and ‘Take Responsibility’, brought the journey full circle. Children learned to look back with honesty, to recognise the impact of their choices, and to understand that independence involves both personal responsibility and consideration for others. In the closing bulletin, ‘Goal and Target Setting’, we saw how all these strands come together to help children shape their next steps with purpose, confidence, and growing self‑awareness.

Across this journey, one theme has held everything together: independence is built through partnership between children, families, and school. When we use shared language and consistent messages, children learn that independence is not something they must navigate alone. It is a way of approaching learning, relationships, and challenges with confidence, curiosity, and care.
