Mae stori mis Rhagfyr 'Lleisiau Bach, Syniadau Mawr' yn ein gwahodd i oedi a myfyrio. Mae'n gyfnod pan fydd dyddiau oerach a nosweithiau hirach yn cynnig lle ar gyfer sgyrsiau ystyrlon—a pha ffordd well o'u sbarduno na thrwy stori fer sy'n annog meddwl dwfn a thrafodaeth ar y cyd.

Da mewn Drwg, Drwg mewn Da

Yn yr hen amser roedd ffermwr ifanc yn byw yng nglaswelltiroedd gogleddol Tsieina a oedd wrth ei fodd â cheffylau. Un diwrnod digwyddodd peth ofnadwy. Rhedodd ei hoff gaseg i ffwrdd a chroesi'r ffin i wlad y gelyn. Roedd y dyn ifanc wedi'i alaru'n drist. Cydymdeimlodd ei ffrindiau a'i gymdogion ag ef dros ei golled. Ond, dim ond gwenu wnaeth ei dad.


'Mae'n drist colli ceffyl,' meddai'r hen ŵr, 'ond pwy a ŵyr pa fendith a allai ddod o'r anffawd hon. Rhaid inni aros a gweld.'


Yn wir, o fewn ychydig wythnosau roedd dagrau'r dyn ifanc wedi troi'n llawenydd, oherwydd un diwrnod daeth dau geffyl yn galopio dros y gwastadeddau. Roedd caseg y ffermwr yn dod adref, gan ddod â march Mongolaidd golygus yn rhedeg wrth ei hochr. Roedd y dyn ifanc wrth ei fodd. Ymgasglodd ei ffrindiau a'i gymdogion o gwmpas i rannu yn ei lwc dda. Ond, ysgwydodd ei dad ei ben yn drist.


'A ie,' meddai, mae hyn yn edrych fel lwc dda, ond pwy a ŵyr pa ddrwg a allai ddod ohono? Rhaid inni aros a gweld.'


Roedd y dyn ifanc yn falch o gael ei hoff gaseg yn ôl yn ei stabl ochr yn ochr â'r march godidog. 


'Nawr, byddaf yn mwynhau bywyd,' meddyliodd. 


Dechreuodd dreulio mwy a mwy o amser yn marchogaeth a llai o amser yn ffermio. Yna un diwrnod tra roedd allan yn galopio, cafodd ei daflu o gefn y march. Torrwyd ei glun ac prin y gallai symud. Unwaith eto daeth ei gymdogion i gydymdeimlo â'i anffawd. Ond eisteddodd ei dad yn ôl yn edrych yn fodlon.


'Peidiwn â bod yn drist,' meddai. 'Pwy sydd i wybod pa lwc dda sydd ar ei ffordd oherwydd y ddamwain hon? Arhoswch i weld.'


'Arhoswch i weld!' ebychodd y perthnasau eraill. Pwy bynnag glywodd am ddaioni yn dod o ddamwain?'


Nid oedd yn rhaid iddynt aros yn hir. O fewn mis ymosododd y gelyn o'r gogledd, a galwyd ar bob dyn abl i ymuno â'r fyddin. Roedd y brwydrau'n ffyrnig, a bu farw cannoedd ar faes y gad. O bob deg dyn dim ond un a ddychwelodd a llenwwyd y pentrefi â llefain gweddwon ac amddifad.


Fodd bynnag, roedd y ffermwr ifanc yn ddiogel. Roedd ei gwymp drwg wedi'i adael yn anaddas i fod yn filwr. Pan aeth eraill i ffwrdd i ymladd, arhosodd gartref mewn cysur a diogelwch.


Aeth y blynyddoedd heibio a daeth y dyn ifanc hefyd yn dad. Yn araf iawn, gwellodd ei glun wedi'i dorri, ond roedd yn dal i boeni pryd bynnag y byddai gwynt oer yn chwythu. Ond bob tro y teimlai'r boen, roedd yn ei atgoffa o'i lwc dda o fod yn fyw.


'Y da yn y drwg, a'r drwg yn y da,' byddai'n dweud. Yna byddai'n eistedd yn ôl ac yn breuddwydio am ei geffylau.

Cwestiwn Allweddol: Beth mae'r stori yn golygu?

  1. Pa dystiolaeth sydd yn y stori fod y ffermwr ifanc wrth ei fodd â cheffylau?

  2. Beth ddywedodd y tad pan glywodd fod hoff gaseg ei fab wedi rhedeg i ffwrdd?

Cwestiwn Allweddol: Beth yw ystyr da a drwg?

  1. Beth mae 'da' yn ei olygu? Oes ganddo un ystyr neu lawer o ystyron?

  2. Beth mae 'drwg' yn ei olygu? Oes ganddo un ystyr neu lawer o ystyron?

  3. I ddweud bod rhywbeth yn dda neu'n ddrwg, a oes rhaid iddo fod yn dda neu'n ddrwg i gyd?

  4. Os ydych chi'n berson da, a yw hynny'n golygu nad ydych chi byth yn gwneud pethau drwg? 

  5. Os ydych chi'n berson drwg, beth fyddai angen i chi ei wneud i ddod yn dda?

  6. A oes rhywbeth fel lwc dda neu anlwc?

  7. Allwch chi feddwl am enghraifft o dda yn dod allan o anlwc?

December’s 'Little Voices, Big Ideas' story invites us to pause and reflect. It’s a time when colder days and longer evenings offer space for meaningful conversations—and what better way to spark them than through a short story that encourages deep thinking and shared discussion.

Good in Bad, Bad in Good

In ancient times there lived in the northern grasslands of China a young farmer who loved horses. One day a terrible thing happened. His favourite mare ran off and crossed the frontier into the land of the enemy. The young man was grief-stricken. His friends and neighbours sympathised with him over his loss. But, his father just smiled.


'It is sad to lose one's horse,' said the old man, 'but who knows what blessing might come from this misfortune. We must wait and see.' 


Sure enough, within a few weeks the young man's tears had turned to joy, for one day two horses came galloping over the plains. The farmer's mare was coming home, bringing a handsome Mongolian stallion running beside her. The young man was overjoyed. His friends and neighbours gathered round to share in his good fortune. But, his father shook his head sadly.


'Ah yes,' he said, this looks like good fortune, but who knows what bad might come of it? We must just wait and see.'


The young man was pleased to have his favourite mare back in his stable alongside the magnificent stallion. 


'Now, I shall enjoy life,' he thought. 


He began to spend more and more time riding and less time farming. Then one day while he was out galloping, he was thrown from the stallion's back. His hip was broken and he could hardly move. Once again his neighbours came to sympathise over his misfortune. But his father sat back looking content.


'Let us not be sad,' he said. 'Who is to know what good luck is on its way because of this accident? Wait and see.'


'Wait and see!' exclaimed the other relatives. Whoever heard of good coming from an accident?'


They did not have long to wait. Within a month the enemy attacked from the north, and all able-bodied men were called upon to join the army. The battles were fierce, and hundreds died on the field of battle. Out of every ten men only one returned and the villages were filled with the cries of widows and orphans.


The young farmer however was safe. His bad fall had left him unfit to be a soldier. When others had gone off to fight he stayed at home in comfort and in safety. 


The years went by and the young man too became a father. Slowly his broken hip mended, but it still ached whenever a cold wind blew. But each time he felt the pain it reminded him of his good fortune in being alive.


"It's the good in the bad, and the bad in the good,' he would say. Then he would sit back and dream of his horses.

Thinking About the Story

Key Question: What does the story mean?

  1. What evidence is in the story that the young farmer loved horses?

  2. What did the father say when he heard that his son's favourite mare had run off?

  3. Why do you think the mare came galloping back with a stallion?

  4. What did his father think of this? Why did he think so?

  5. What accident happened? What might be a reason for the accident?

  6. Was there a reason for the accident? If so, what might have been the reason?

  7. Do you think the father loved his son? Do you have a reason for thinking so?

  8. Do we know if the young man wanted to join the army? What do you think?

  9. What did the pain in his hip remind him of? Why was this?

  10. What do you think was in the young man's dreams? Were they real dreams?


Thinking About Good and Bad

Key Question: What is good, and what is bad?

  1. What does 'good' mean? Does it have one meaning or many meanings?

  2. What does 'bad' mean? Does it have one meaning or many meanings?

  3. To say something is good or bad, does it have to be all good or bad?

  4. If you are a good person does that mean you never do bad things?

  5. It you are a bad person what would you need to do to become good?

  6. Is there such a thing as good or bad luck?

  7. Can you think of an example of good coming out of bad luck?

  8. Can you think of an example of bad coming out of good luck?

  9. Do you think life is more good than bad - in what ways?

  10. Would you agree that there is always good in bad and bad in good?


Further Activities
  • Illustrate a chart with two columns showing things that are good for you and bad for you.

  • Write or make up a play telling about someone who has good luck, which turns to bad luck, then good luck and so on.

  • Write a school report about yourself, showing what you are good and not-so-good at, and what your aims should be in the future.

  • Make a chart listing the good things in your life (on one side) and the bad things (on the other). What things fall in the middle? Why?

  • Discuss ingredients for a recipe for A ‘Good Life’ (or school, teacher, friend, holiday, party).
