Wrth i ni gamu i mewn i flwyddyn newydd, mae stori mis Ionawr 'Lleisiau Bach, Syniadau Mawr' yn cynnig yr amser perffaith i oedi ac ystyried beth mae harddwch yn ei olygu mewn gwirionedd. Ai rhywbeth rydyn ni'n ei weld, rhywbeth rydyn ni'n ei deimlo, neu rywbeth rydyn ni'n ei adnabod yn ein gilydd ydyw? Y mis hwn, rydyn ni'n gwahodd plant i archwilio natur harddwch—nid yn unig mewn celf neu ymddangosiad, ond mewn caredigrwydd, gwirionedd, a'r byd o'n cwmpas.
Y Ddau Arlunydd
Flynyddoedd lawer yn ôl yng Ngwlad Groeg cynhaliwyd cystadleuaeth i ddod o hyd i'r arlunydd gorau. Roedd pobl Gwlad Groeg wrth eu bodd â harddwch ym mhob ffurf ac yn ceisio dod o hyd i'r gorau ym mhob peth. Cynhaliwyd y Gemau Olympaidd ganddynt i ddarganfod pwy oedd orau ym mhob camp, a chynhaliwyd cystadlaethau mewn barddoniaeth, cerddoriaeth, peintio a cherflunwaith. Dyma stori am un o'r cystadlaethau hynny.
Nid oedd neb yn gallu penderfynu pa un o ddau arlunydd oedd yr artist gorau. Roedd rhai pobl yn well ganddynt un artist, roedd rhai'n well ganddynt y llall. Felly penderfynasant ofyn i hen ŵr a fu unwaith yn arlunydd gorau ei ddydd i farnu rhyngddynt. Gosododd yr hen ŵr dasg i'r arlunwyr - roedd pob un i beintio llun a oedd i fod mor wir i fywyd ag y gallent ei wneud. Ymhen tri mis roeddent i ddychwelyd, a dangos eu paentiadau. Yna byddai'r hen ŵr yn barnu pa un oedd orau.
Aeth y ddau artist i ffwrdd, ac ar ôl tri mis dychwelasant, pob un yn dod â llun gorffenedig gydag ef. Ymgasglodd y tyrfaoedd yn y farchnad yn awyddus i weld pa arlunydd fyddai'n ennill. Safodd yr hen ŵr oedd i feirniadu yno o flaen y ddau baentiad, pob un ohonynt wedi'u gorchuddio â llen. Rhoddwyd signal. Daeth yr arlunydd cyntaf ymlaen a thynnu'r llen a oedd yn gorchuddio ei lun yn ôl.
Canmolodd y dorf fod y paentiad yn brydferth ac yn debyg iawn i fywyd. Dangosodd fowlen o rawnwin a oedd yn edrych mor aeddfed a suddlon fel nad oedd pobl yn gallu credu nad oeddent yn real. Yn sydyn, plymiodd rhai adar a oedd wedi bod yn hedfan gerllaw i lawr a dechrau pigo ar y llun. Roeddent yn ceisio bwyta'r grawnwin! Cymeradwyodd y dorf a bloeddio. Os oedd y paentiad yn ddigon da i dwyllo'r adar, mae'n rhaid mai ef oedd yr enillydd yn sicr.
Nawr roedd hi'n dro'r arlunydd arall. Rhoddodd yr hen ŵr yr signal i'r llen gael ei thynnu yn ôl fel y gallai pawb weld drostynt eu hunain pa lun yr oedd yr artist hwn wedi'i baentio. Gwenodd yr arlunydd ifanc ond ni symudodd.
'Eich tro chi yw hi,' meddai'r barnwr. 'Gadewch i ni weld eich paentiad fel y gallwn farnu pa un sydd orau.' Ond ni symudodd yr arlunydd o hyd. Beth oedd ystyr hyn? Roedd yr hen ŵr yn mynd yn ddiamynedd. Camodd ymlaen i dynnu'r llen yn ôl iddo'i hun. Aeth ei law at y
llen, ond nid oedd yn ymddangos ei fod yn gallu cael gafael arni.
"Does dim llen yma," meddai wrth y dorf. "Y llen yw'r paentiad. Mae'n baentiad o len. Mae'n edrych yn union fel un go iawn!"
Ganodd y dorf gyda syndod.
Pan oedd wedi gwella, gwyddai'r hen ŵr fod yn rhaid iddo ddewis enillydd.
Pwy fyddai'n ei ddewis? Trodd at yr arlunydd cyntaf a dweud, Roedd eich paentiad yn ddigon da i dwyllo'r adar. Yna wrth yr ail dywedodd, 'Ond mae eich llun yn well oherwydd iddo dwyllo llygaid bodau dynol! Felly, chi yw'r enillydd.' Bloeddiodd y dorf ac aeth yr arlunydd ymlaen i gasglu ei wobr fel enillydd y gystadleuaeth.
Roeddent wedi darganfod pwy oedd yr arlunydd gorau. Neu, a oeddent?
(Addasiad o'r Hanesydd Groegaidd Herodotus)

Meddwl am y Stori
Cwestiwn Allweddol: Beth mae'r stori yn ei olygu?
Pa fath o gystadleuaeth oedd ganddyn nhw yng Ngwlad Groeg hynafol?
Pa dasg a osodwyd i bob arlunydd yn y gystadleuaeth hon?
Pwy oedd i feirniadu'r gystadleuaeth? Ydych chi'n meddwl ei fod yn ddewis da i fod yn feirniad?
Sut oedd y lluniau i gael eu beirniadu yn y gystadleuaeth?
Twyllodd un paentiad yr adar. Sut y cawsant eu twyllo?
Twyllodd y paentiad arall lygaid dyn. Beth mae hyn yn ei olygu? A yw eich llygaid erioed wedi cael eu twyllo?
Ydych chi'n meddwl ei bod yn gystadleuaeth deg? Pam?
Ydych chi'n meddwl bod yr enillydd wedi peintio'r llun mwyaf prydferth? Pam?
Ydych chi'n meddwl bod y gystadleuaeth wedi profi pwy oedd yr arlunydd gorau?
Pa deitl fyddech chi'n ei roi i'r stori?
Meddwl am Harddwch
Cwestiwn Allweddol: Beth yw ystyr harddwch?
Beth yw'r gwahaniaeth rhwng llun cyffredin a llun hardd?
Pa bethau yn y byd all fod yn brydferth? Allwch chi roi enghreifftiau?
A all person fod yn brydferth? Beth sy'n gwneud person yn brydferth?
A yw pob person yn brydferth mewn rhyw ffordd?
A allai llun o flodyn fod yn fwy prydferth na blodyn?
A allai llun o berson fod yn fwy prydferth na'r person?
Beth sy'n gwneud rhywbeth yn hyll?
Beth sy'n gwneud rhywbeth yn brydferth?
Beth yw'r peth mwyaf prydferth rydych chi'n ei wybod?
Beth oedd yr eiliad fwyaf prydferth yn eich bywyd?
Gweithgareddau Pellach
Rhowch ddau lun i'ch plentyn edrych arnynt, e.e. darluniau o ddau baentiad o bwnc tebyg, a gofynnwch iddynt drafod pa un o'r ddau y maent yn ei ffafrio a pham.
Edrychwch ar gasgliad o baentiadau neu luniadau. Pa rai ydych chi'n eu cael yn brydferth neu'n hyll? Pam?
Astudiwch enghreifftiau o baentiadau bywyd llonydd. Peintiwch neu lluniwch fywyd llonydd e.e. o rawnwin mewn powlen.
Chwaraewch rai enghreifftiau o gerddoriaeth. Pa ddarn y maent yn ei feddwl sy'n fwy prydferth i'w wrando arno? Pam?

As we step into a new year, January’s 'Little Voices, Big Ideas' story offers the perfect moment to pause and consider what beauty truly means. Is it something we see, something we feel, or something we recognise in one another? This month, we invite children to explore the nature of beauty—not just in art or appearance, but in kindness, truth, and the world around us.
The Two Painters
Many years ago in Greece they held a competition to find the best painter. The people of Greece loved beauty in all its forms and tried to find the best in all things. They held the Olympic Games to find out who was the best in every sport, and they held competitions in poetry, music, painting and sculpture. This is a story about one of those competitions.
Nobody could decide which of two painters was the better artist. Some people preferred one artist, some preferred the other. So they decided to ask an old man who had once been the best painter of his day to judge between them. The old man set the painters a task - each was to paint a picture that was to be as true to life as they could make it. In three months they were to return, and show their paintings. The old man would then judge which was the best.
The two artists went away, and after three months they returned, each bringing with him a finished picture. The crowds gathered in the market place eager to see which painter would be the winner. The old man who was to judge stood there in front of the two paintings, each of which was covered in a curtain. A signal was given. The first painter came forward and pulled back the curtain which covered his picture.
The crowd cheered for the painting was beautiful and very life-like. It showed a bowl of grapes which looked so ripe and juicy that people could hardly believe that they were not real. Suddenly some birds who had been flying nearby swooped down and began pecking at the picture. They were trying to eat the grapes! The crowd clapped and cheered. If the painting was good enough to fool the birds it must surely be the winner.
Now it was the turn of the other painter. The old man gave the signal for the curtain to be pulled back so that all might see for themselves what picture this artist had painted. The young painter smiled but did not move.
'It's your turn,' said the judge. 'Let us see your painting so that we can judge which is best.' But still the painter did not move. What was the meaning of this? The old man was getting impatient. He stepped forward to pull the curtain back for himself. His hand went to the
curtain, bit he did not seem able to get a grip on it.
"There is no curtain here,' he said to the crowd. "The curtain is the painting. It is a painting of a curtain. It looks just like a real one!'
The crowd gasped with surprise.
When he had recovered the old man knew he must choose a winner.
Who would he choose? He turned to the first painter and said, Your painting was good enough to deceive the birds. Then to the second he said, 'But your picture is better for it deceived the eyes of humans! You are therefore the winner.' The crowd cheered and the painter went forward to collect his prize as winner of the competition.
They had found out who the best painter was. Or, had they?
(Adapted from the Greek Historian Herodotus)

Thinking About the Story
Key Question: What is the meaning of the story?
What kinds of competition did they have in ancient Greece?
What task was each painter set in this competition?
Who was to judge the competition? Do you think he was a good choice to be the judge?
How were the pictures to be judged in the competition?
One painting deceived the birds. How were they deceived?
The other painting deceived the eyes of man. What does this mean? Have your eyes ever been deceived?
Do you think it was a fair competition? Why?
Do you think the winner painted the more beautiful picture? Why?
Do you think the competition proved which was the better painter?
What title would you give the story?
Thinking About Beauty
Key Question: What is beauty?
What is the difference between an ordinary picture and a beautiful picture?
What things in the world can be beautiful? Can you give examples?
Can a person be beautiful? What makes a person beautiful?
Is every person beautiful in some way?
Could a picture of a flower be more beautiful than the flower itself?
Could a picture of a person be more beautiful than the person?
What makes something ugly?
What makes something beautiful?
What is the most beautiful thing you know?
What was the most beautiful moment in your life?
Further Activities
Give your child two pictures to look at, e.g. illustrations of two paintings of a similar subject, and ask them to discuss which of the two they prefer and why.
Look at a collection of paintings or drawings. Which ones do you find beautiful or ugly? Why?
Study examples of still-life paintings. Paint or draw a still-life e.g. of grapes in a bowl.
Play some examples of music. Which piece do they think is more beautiful to listen to? Why?
