MEITHRIN, DERBYN A BLWYDDYN 1

Seren a Sbarc!

Shwmae! Fel rhan o'n dathliadau Shwmae Shwmae, mae gennym brosiect newydd cyffrous ar gyfer ein Meithrinfa, Dosbarth Derbyn a Blwyddyn 1. Er mwyn annog mwy o blant i ddefnyddio Cymraeg gartref, ac yn y gymuned, rydym wedi creu pecyn Sbarc a Seren ar gyfer pob dosbarth.

Bydd y plentyn sydd wedi ennill Llefarydd yr Wythnos Cymru yn derbyn pecyn ddydd Gwener. Gofynnwn ichi fynd â Seren a Sbarc adref a mynd â nhw gyda chi pan fyddwch yn cwblhau gweithgareddau fel teulu neu'n mynd ar ddiwrnodau allan gyda'ch gilydd. Gofynnwn yn garedig i'ch plentyn dynnu/tynnu llun digidol ac yn ysgrifennu brawddeg fer am yr hyn rydych chi wedi bod yn ei wneud. Sicrhewch eich bod yn dychwelyd y pecyn erbyn y dydd Mercher canlynol lle bydd athro eich plentyn yn dathlu'r hyn y mae anturiaethau Seren a Sbarc wedi bod yn ei fwynhau gyda chi!

Byrbrydau

Rydyn ni'n gofyn yn garedig, lle bo hynny'n bosibl, bod plant yn dod â byrbrydau iach i mewn. Dros yr wythnosau diwethaf, mae nifer o blant wedi bod yn dod â llawer o fyrbrydau i mewn sy'n seiliedig ar siwgr. Rydym yn cynghori taw ffrwythau neu lysiau ffres yw'r opsiwn gorau i blant. Mae gan blant Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sir Torfaen, yn ôl yr ystadegau diweddaraf, y pydredd dannedd gwaethaf yn y Deyrnas Unedig.

Yn ogystal, rydym yn dal i gael rhai plant yn dod â chynhyrchion gyda chnau i mewn. Mae hyn yn beryglus iawn i'n staff a'n disgyblion sydd ag alergeddau cnau. Peidiwch ag anfon unrhyw gynhyrchion sy'n seiliedig ar gnau i'r ysgol - mae hyn yn cynnwys rhywfaint o fariau brecwast a grawnfwyd.

Diolch am eich cydweithrediad.

Blwyddyn 4

Sgrinio Dyslecsia

Fel ysgol, rydym yn falch o gyhoeddi y byddwn yn ymgymryd â rhywfaint o sgrinio cychwynnol ar gyfer pob plentyn ym Mlwyddyn 4 dros yr wythnosau nesaf er mwyn tynnu sylw os oes ganddynt dueddiad tuag at ddyslecsia. Rydym yn gwneud hyn trwy gemau a rhaglen gyfrifiadurol i ddechrau. Mae hwn yn asesiad cyflym o'r enw ac mae'n para tua 15 munud. Y llynedd, roedd hyn yn gymaint o help i ni ag addysgwyr ac i deuluoedd. Fe helpodd ni i addasu ein dulliau addysgu a dod i adnabod anghenion plant yn well. Os yw'r sgrinio cychwynnol hwn yn tynnu sylw at y gallai plentyn gael tueddiad canolig neu uchel tuag at ddyslecsia yna byddwn mewn cysylltiad er mwyn cael eich caniatâd i gynnal asesiad llawnach. Yna byddwn yn dod â chi i mewn i drafod ymhellach.

Er, ni allwn wneud diagnosis fel ysgol - a rhaid imi bwysleisio hynny - ein meddylfryd yw gweithio ar unrhyw strategaethau a chefnogaeth mor gynnar â phosibl fel na chollir unrhyw foment. Y llynedd, gwnaethom gwblhau sgrinio ac yna asesiadau llawn gyda phob un o'n plant o flwyddyn 4 i fyny ac mae wir wedi ein helpu i ddod o hyd i'r ffyrdd gorau o gefnogi plant.

Mae'r asesiad llawnach hwn yn edrych ar naw maes allweddol, yr wyf am eu hamlinellu isod:

1. Cof Gweledol

Mae'r term cof gweledol yn golygu cofio rhywbeth rydyn ni wedi'i weld fel patrymau gweledol, gemau cof gweledol, geiriau, llythrennau, rhifau, neu unrhyw fath o ysgogiadau gweledol. Dyma un o'r ffyrdd mwyaf sylfaenol rydyn ni'n dysgu. Os ydych chi'n cael amser caled yn dwyn i gof yr hyn rydych chi wedi'i weld, bydd yn anoddach ei ddysgu.

2. Cof Dilyniannol Clywedol

Mae cof clywedol yn golygu cymryd gwybodaeth a gyflwynir ar lafar, prosesu'r wybodaeth honno, ei storio yn eich meddwl, ac yna dwyn i gof yr hyn y mae rhywun wedi'i glywed. Yn y bôn, mae'n cynnwys y sgiliau gwrando, prosesu, storio ac adalw.

3. Sgiliau Ffoneg

Phonics skills involves matching the sounds of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters. For example, the sound k can be spelled as c, k, ck or ch. Teaching children to blend the sounds of letters together helps them decode unfamiliar or unknown words by sounding them out.

4. Prosesu Ffonolegol (Torri Geiriau)

Prosesu ffonolegol yw'r defnydd o seiniau mewn iaith. Mae'n cynnwys canfod a gwahaniaethu gyda seiniau lleferydd. Sgil llafar yw hon ac nid yw’n seiliedig ar wybodaeth y plentyn o lythrennau – mae’n ymwneud yn unig â’r synau mae’n eu clywed o fewn geiriau a’r gallu i dorri geiriau i lawr i darnau sain llai.

5. Darllen Geiriau Unigol

Darllen geiriau unigol allan o'u cyd-destun. Er enghraifft: adnabod y gair printiedig, o ddewis o bum dewis arall, sy'n cyfateb i air llafar.

6. Darllen Brawddegau

Mae darllen brawddegau yn cynnwys cywirdeb darllen (fel adnabod geiriau gan ddefnyddio sgiliau datgodio ffonolegol a strategaethau gweledol gair cyfan) a deall yr hyn y maent yn ei ddarllen.

7. Sillafu

Mae hyn yn golygu'r gallu i sillafu geiriau y maent wedi dod ar eu traws o'r blaen yn gywir, eu deall ac sy'n addas ar gyfer eu hystod oedran.

8. Rhesymu Geiriol

Rhesymu geiriol, yn gryno, yw meddwl â geiriau. Fel y mae'r enw'n ei awgrymu, mae'n fath o ddatrys problemau sy'n seiliedig ar eiriau ac iaith. Mae'n cynnwys meddwl am destun, datrys problemau geiriau, dilyn cyfarwyddiadau ysgrifenedig i ddod o hyd i ateb, sylwi ar ddilyniannau llythrennau a thorri codau llythrennau a rhif.

9. Rhesymu An-Eiriol

Mae rhesymu di-eiriau yn cynnwys y gallu i ddeall a dadansoddi gwybodaeth weledol a datrys problemau gan ddefnyddio rhesymu gweledol. Er enghraifft: adnabod perthnasoedd, tebygrwydd a gwahaniaethau rhwng siapiau a phatrymau, adnabod dilyniannau gweledol a pherthnasoedd rhwng gwrthrychau, a chofio’r rhain.

Rwyf bob amser ar gael i drafod unrhyw ymholiadau neu bryderon a allai fod gennych ynglŷn â chefnogaeth ychwanegol fel y mae CADY'r ysgol, Miss Caitlin O'Sullivan a'i thîm.

EVERYONE

PTA

I am excited to announce that we are due to hold a PTA meeting on Monday, 23rd of October. Based on feedback, we are going to hold this between 7 and 8pm at the Open Hearth Pub. We really need families to support to join the PTA, share ideas and help hold events for the benefit of the children. Such as Christmas presents for the children, perhaps fun evenings or discos for the children, bringing families together for a twmpath etc.

Please come along to help the PTA to give our children even more opportunities!

Simon Carey's Music

Many of you will know Simon Carey because he runs individual music lessons at school for children. Simon has number of spaces available. If you are interested in having guitar, drums or piano lessons, please contact Simon using the information below.

NURSERY, RECEPTION AND YEAR 1

Seren a Sbarc!

Shwmae! As part of our Shwmae Shwmae celebrations, we have an exciting new project for Nursery, Reception and Year 1. To encourage more children to use Welsh at home, and in the community, we have created a Seren a Sbarc pack for each class.

The child who has won Welsh Speaker of the week will receive a pack on Friday. We ask that you take Seren a Sbarc home and take them with you when you complete activities as a family or go on days out together. We kindly ask that your child draws/takes a digital picture and writes a short sentence about what you have been up to. Please ensure you return the pack by the following Wednesday where your child’s teacher will celebrate what adventures Seren and Sbarc have been enjoying with you!

EVERYONE

Snacks

We kindly ask, where possible, that children bring in healthy snacks. Over the last few weeks, a number of children have been bringing in many snacks that are sugar-based. We advise fresh fruit or vegetable sticks as the best option for children. Torfaen County Borough Council's children, according to the most recent statistics, have the worst tooth decay in the United Kingdom.

In addition, we are still having some children bringing in products with nuts. This is very dangerous to our staff and pupils who have airborne nut allergies. Please do not sent any nut based products into school - this includes some breakfast and cereal bars.

Thank you for your co-operation.

YEAR 4

Dyslexia Screening

As a school, we are proud to announce that over the next few weeks we will be undertaking some initial screening for every child in Year 4 in order to flag up if they have a tendency towards dyslexia. We do this though games and a computer programme initially. This is a called a RAPID assessment and lasts around 15 minutes. Last year, this was such a help to us as educators and to families. It helped us to adapt our teaching methods and get to know children's needs better. If this initial screening flags up that a child might have a medium or high tendency towards dyslexia then we will be in touch in order to get your permission to undertake a fuller assessment. Then we will bring you in to discuss further.

Although, we cannot diagnose as a school - and I must stress that - our mentality is to get working on any strategies and support as early as possible so that no moment is lost. Last year, we completed screening and then full assessments with all of our children from Year 4 upwards and it really has helped us to find the best ways to support children.

This fuller assessment looks at nine key areas, which I want to outline below:

1. Visual Memory

The term visual memory is means recalling something we've seen such as visual patterns, visual memory games, words, letters, numbers, or any type of visual stimuli. This is one of the most basic ways we learn. If you have a hard time recalling what you’ve seen, it will be more difficult to learn.

2. Auditory Sequential Memory

Auditory memory involves taking in information that is presented orally, processing that information, storing it in one’s mind, and then recalling what one has heard. Basically, it involves the skills of listening, processing, storing, and recalling.

3. Phonic Skills

Phonics skills involves matching the sounds of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters. For example, the sound k can be spelled as c, k, ck or ch. Teaching children to blend the sounds of letters together helps them decode unfamiliar or unknown words by sounding them out.

4. Phonological Processing (Breaking Words Down)

Phonological processing is the use of sounds in a language. It involves detecting and differentiating with speech sounds. This is an oral skill and is not based on the child’s knowledge of letters – it is purely about the sounds they hear within words and the ability to break words down to smaller sound chunks.

5. Single Word Reading

Reading individual words out of context. For instance: identifying the printed word, from a choice of five alternatives, that corresponds to a spoken word.

6. Sentence Reading

Sentence reading involves both reading accuracy (such as word recognition using phonological decoding skills and whole-word visual strategies) and understanding what they are reading.

7. Spelling

This means the ability to accurately spell words that they have come across before, understand and are suitable for their age range.

8. Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning is, in a nutshell, thinking with words. As the name suggests, it’s a form of problem-solving based around words and language. It involves thinking about text, solving word problems, following written instructions to come up with a solution, spotting letter sequences and cracking letter and number-based codes.

9. Non-Verbal Reasoning

Non-verbal reasoning involves the ability to understand and analyse visual information and solve problems using visual reasoning. For example: identifying relationships, similarities and differences between shapes and patterns, recognizing visual sequences and relationships between objects, and remembering these.

I am always available to discuss any queries or concerns you might have regarding additional support as is the school ALNCo, Miss Caitlin O'Sullivan and her team.
